The Macaque is a medium sized, mainly forest dwelling Old World monkey which has a long face and cheek pouches for holding food.

There are 23 species of Macaque, living throughout Asia, North Africa and just one in Gibraltar, the Barbary Macaque.

They mainly eat Fruit (frugivorous) but their diet also includes seeds, leaves, flowers and tree bark, although one species, being the Crab-eating Macaque subsist on a variety of invertebrates and occasionally small vertebrates.

All Macaque social groups are arranged around dominant females.  They have a lifespan of between 20 to 30 years.
